Your family and career are important parts of your life. If anyone believes that, I certainly do, and the reality is that most of us spend more time at work than we do at home with our families. Yes, your job and your family are, and should be, an important component of your life. But wait. There’s more. There’s you.
I work long hours and when I’m in the office, I’m on. I am also a wife, mother, daughter, sister, aunt, and a friend. Nevertheless, I’m quite clear on the fact that I also have to take care of myself. I have to practice the kinds of healthy self-care habits that help me find peace and reinvigorate me so I can be my best self for my family, for my employees, for my clients, and for me. There are times I get out of balance, but I have specific strategies to rebalance myself.
Here are a few restorative practices that can help you manage the stress of a demanding career and family life:
Anything that takes your mind off work or personal issues, especially done with a meditative state of mind, is wonderful for reducing stress and allowing you to rebalance. As I write this, adult coloring books are all the rage, and the publishers’ marketing angle is that coloring is a great way to relax. Some people bake or clean when they need to unwind. Others watch comedies and laugh away the stress.
Figure out what you can do that will leave you feeling renewed and make it a regular practice. Recognize that when you feel so overwhelmed you think there’s no way you can find five minutes for any of your relaxation techniques, that’s the time you most need them.
Do you know of some other great ways to balance and recharge? Please share it in the comment section and I’ll add it to our list.
