Tests for Herpes

Herpes infection is very common, the most common being Herpes Labialis, which is also called cold sores. There are more serious herpes infections also. Patients are often confused about the test results they receive – IgM, IgG, viral culture etc. Negative IgM and negative culture suggest that there is no acute infection. Positive IgG shows that you have had past infection. There is another test polymerase chain reaction (PCR) which has been widely used recently. Tzanck smear shows the presence of herpes virus also. Rarely, more than one test is ordered by your physician – it could get expensive, though.
