Probiotics and antibiotics

Probiotics do not seem to afford protection when using antibiotics: 
Probiotics have become very popular recently because of the media attention about its benefits. Many patients request probiotics because of the increased awareness of its perception of benefits in maintaining better health while taking antibiotics. In a recent study, Allen, S. J. et al, 2013, found no benefit in use of probiotics when studied for its effectiveness in controlling “diarrhea severity, frequency of abdominal symptoms, length of hospital stay, and quality of life.” We may be wasting money by taking probiotics along with antibiotics.
