One of the common causes of persistent cough in adults is an infection called Pertussis (whooping cough). This is interesting because it has been a preventable disease on the rise recently. In Colorado between 1997 and 2000, research showed that refusal for pertussis vaccine was associated with 23-fold increased risk for pertussis risk (Tempte, J. L., 2012). Many patients do not know that there is a new vaccine, Tdap, which is very safe for adults, and this can prevent contracting whooping cough in adults. Ask your doctor about Tdap vaccine for adults.
