Preventing cold and flu by Gargling!
Most Americans do not practice gargling the mouth, while many Asians frequently have the habit of gargling mouth different times during a day. This practice of gargling has been shown to be effective in reducing the multiplication of viruses entering our mouth thus reducing the incidence of cold and flu. Kitamura et al (2005) showed gargling with plain tap water can achieve this result while other studies showed that gargling with half tea spoon of salt in 8 ounces of water reduced upper respiratory infections by 40% (Sonnenberg, W.R., 2013). Let us practice gargling frequently and give a break to our mucosal immune system!
