Many patients wonder why only one side of nose is blocked when you have allergies even though you inhale through both nostrils. When one side of your nose is closed, the other side tries to open to keep us alive. This is an evolutionary survival mechanism that happens in acute conditions like allergies. Even though the exposure is on both sides the body has a mechanism to keep one side open by reducing blood flow to one side.
