High Functioning Autism and Progress

High Functioning Autism is being recognized and diagnosed more often recently than ever before. I see many parents with many questions, and it is very disheartening not to know how the child is going to progress. The answer is still not clear as even among those diagnosed and categorized as high functioning; there is a wide variation in the cognitive functions. Most children with communication disorders are directed to programs such as Early Steps, which incorporate some therapies such as occupational and speech therapies, which do have a positive impact. If all the resources are utilized, and if the child gets early intervention, the child will catch at varying degrees based on the cognitive status (baseline ability for overall functioning).
