Can supplemental calcium be bad for you?

Many women are taking regular doses of additional calcium, some with added Vitamin D because reports of high incidence of osteoporosis after menopause. Michaelsson, K. et al (2013) reported that “high intakes of calcium in women are associated with higher death rates from all causes and cardiovascular disease but not from stroke.” The authors found the risk was higher with higher doses of more than 1400 mg/day. Women need to go less aggressive in their intake of total calcium from dietary and from calcium supplements.
