A favorite spot in the Ocala National Forest is the Salt Springs Recreation Area with it’s constant 74° Fahrenheit waters gushing from vertical fissures from deep within the earth. Believing that the springs provide medicinal healing powers, many people flock to this area to swim and be one with nature. The Salt Springs derived its name from the fact that the spring has trace quantities of potassium, magnesium and sodium salts that give the waters a slight salinity. Other activities in this recreation area include boating, snorkeling, camping, nature watching and fishing.
The Salt Spring flows from an under ground aquifer, down a short river path and into Lake George, the second largest lake in the state of Florida. Canoe rentals are available at the Slat Springs Recreation Area Marina and you can travel along the path of the spring and observe Florida’s lush tropical foliage. A simple boat ramp is also available at the recreation area.
Ample camping is available at the Slat Springs Recreation with 160 spots available including both RV spots with hook ups and also simple spots for tent camping. Picnic tables, drinking water and restroom facilities are available in these camping areas. You can even make reservations for camping spots online by clicking here, or your can pamper yourself at our hotel with a heated pool, jacuzzi suite, complimentary breakfast, and wireless internet before spending the day in the forest.
